The Power-Pipe drain-water heat recovery system from Renewability Energy Inc. recycles waste heat from warm drain water before it leaves the home. Approximately 90 per cent of the energy used to heat water goes down to the sewer, and the system can save up to 40 per cent on hot water heating bills with a payback period of two to six years, the company says. The Power-Pipe is composed of specially designed copper coils that wrap around a separate copper pipe which channels warm waste-water. The system is easy to install, requires no maintenance and will last more than 50 years, the company says. EnerQuality Corporation has recently recommended the product for approval and inclusion in the Energy Star for new Homes technical specifications.
