3 Expert Question View - I am interested in finding out whether the Province of Ontario has a permit process in place for anyone who wishes to build a straw bale home within the limits of a city or town - Relevance: 1005
I am interested in finding out whether the Province of Ontario has a permit process in place for anyone who wishes to build a straw bale home within the limits of a city or town. I have been told that California is the only place in the western world where an architect or engineer can approve a straw bale home for construction, and that all other jurisdictions are privy to municipal bylaws. I have also been told that Canada has not yet recognized this form of construction as being 'insurable' even with the stamp of an architect or engineer. I would love to build a sub-division of these homes in Northern Ontario. I know that I can create the marketing material needed to sell the homes, and land within our cities is affordable and plentiful. Can you please help me to clarify this matter?

I have a number of clients who remove the standard hood fan in the kitchen, to install a designer unit, usually with a capacity of about 1,200 cfm (cubic feet per minute) in lieu of the standard 180 cfm hood fan. I have been told that in winter, designer fans can completely exhaust all the inside warm air in less than an hour. If this is so, what can my clients do to maintain comfort levels and still run these monster fans in their kitchens?

We just purchased a 1936 log cabin on the lake. We love it. The only problem is some of the logs need to be repaired, and the cottage should be lifted and leveled. The back seems to have sunk over time. We spoke to a contractor, and he said he would use a hydraulic lift and shimmy it up slowly until it's leveled. Can you give some suggestions and some idea how to replace some logs? One other thing: the septic hasn't been used in more than three years. Could this be a problem?

We recently moved from New Brunswick to our current home in southern Ontario. During the winter months, our house becomes a water wonderland. The windows are covered with condensation from top to bottom. We have a<br />dehumidifier running all day and night in the basement, but it still doesn't help - especially when it gets colder. Would an air exchanger be beneficial? The house is only five years old.

We are planning to restore all the original wood floors except for the laundry and bathrooms in our century home. We will lay ceramic tile in the new dining room addition, attached to the kitchen. The kitchen floor which has a 1-2" slope to the back hall and the pantry is also adjacent to the back hall. Our plan was to carry the 8"x8"ceramic tile from the new dining room, over the sloped floor part of the kitchen, in the pantry and out to the back hall. The rest of the kitchen would remain hardwood. We are concerned that the tiles will crack where the dining room and kitchen meet and where the wood floor and the tile meet in the kitchen. Is this likely? We have two options: leave the kitchen, pantry and back halls hardwood and call the slope 'character', or cover the entire kitchen floor, pantry and back hall with a floating wood laminate floor and keep ceramic tiles in the dining room.
